Welcome to Providence! PDF Print E-mail

Providence, Rhode Island is one of the oldest cities in the nation. First settled in the 1630s by Roger Williams, a man who had been cast out of Massachusetts, Providence evolved to be one of the eastern seaboard’s major trading ports. Quick to adopt the trends and ideas of industrialization, the city birthed a thriving silverware and fine jewelry trade. Although Providence remains a center for manufacturing, today it’s also a major hub for secondary education. At its most renowned school, Brown University, you can find literally thousands of the planet’s smartest college students. The Rhode Island School of Design, also based on Providence, has graduated a plethora of world-renowned artists and designers. The city is home to countless examples of historic architecture. The First Baptist Church, built in the early 1600s, still stands proudly, as do many other Providence houses and structures built way before the Revolutionary War. Are you looking for a place to exercise and get some fresh air? Then take the family to Water Place Park. Residents and tour guides alike also recommend that visitors check out the Providence Athenaeum, one of the oldest collections of books in the northern hemisphere.
